Engineered Contained Landfill

Landfill is an essential component of any integrated waste management solution. According to Table 3 of the 2004 National Waste Report 66.4% of Municipal waste was landfilled in 2004. In 1995 there were approximately 130 landfills but this number has steadily declined over the last 10 years to the current number of 28 landfills and more of these are due to close in the near future. Even when other waste management alternatives are developed there will always be a need for the safe disposal of residual waste i.e., waste that cannot be re-used, recycled or recovered.

Landfill Development 4 Phases

Previously, landfills were developed with no lining, which often resulted in contaminants escaping into the local environment causing environmental pollution. Modern landfill sites however, are designed and engineered according to the highest EU environmental standards. All landfill sites must obtain a waste licence from the EPA which outlines in detail development, management and operating conditions which must be adhered to. The licence also requires the licensee to carry out regular environmental monitoring e.g. groundwater/noise/air/odour/litter/vermin ensuring that all sites remain compliant.
Greenstar
currently owns and operates three fully EPA licenced landfills
- Kilcullen, Co.Kildare (KTK), Knockharley Landfill, Co.
Meath and Connaught Regional Residual Landfill, Co. Galway. Greenstar also has full planning and EPA Licences for
one further facility in Wicklow. The company
also has applications with the EPA and relevant local authorities
for three other residual landfill developments.
Greenstar
plans to develop a network of regional residual landfill sites
that will safely dispose of waste that cannot be reduced,
reused, recycled or recovered.
Restoration
It is a condition of all our waste licences that we must submit a restoration and aftercare plan to the EPA. This plan outlines, on a phased basis, our restoration proposals for the facility and our proposals with regard to nature and woodland conservation. As part of Greenstar’s environmental commitment we will restore our sites through extensive engineering and landscaping so that the land can be used for agriculture, forestry, sporting or amenity activities. On closure the facility will continue to be monitored in accordance with EPA requirements. |
