UCD Biosytems Engineering Design Challenge
This year (2004) marks the entry of the very first cohort of
students into the new Biosystems Engineering BE degree course
(DN076) at University College Dublin. As a means of giving these
students a taste of the joys of engineering at an early point
in their academic careers, the Biosystems Engineering Department
in UCD has launched an exciting new design competition for both
first year students in DN076 Biosystems Engineering and DN077
Engineering (Undenominated). The Biosystems Engineering Design
Challenge will provide an early opportunity for students to
learn about engineering design, project management and teamwork
in an environment that is both rewarding and fun.
The aim of the 2004 challenge is for teams of 3–5 students
to: “design, build and operate a biologically-based
bench-scale treatment system to recycle grey water within
apartment-sized domestic buildings”. The theme of the
competition reflects the emphasis of the Biosystems Engineering
course in integrating engineering and biology for sustainable
development and service to biologically based industries.
The competition is generously sponsored by Greenstar, Ireland’s
leading provider of integrated waste management solutions.
The prize fund of ¤2500 will be allocated between team
budgets and overall prize money. Participants will be assessed
on a number of key factors such as teamwork, minimisation
of expenditure, device design, innovation, operational safety,
engineering drawings, report writing and appropriate use of
biological and recycled materials. An independent panel of
engineers and scientists will adjudicate the entries.
